It is true and I believe in the above.Sometimes you have this urge to check on your team and monitor them continually.this tends to make them feel like you on there head.So try and leave them till the date given and let them come to you for any reference.It helps.I remember my boss telling me this recently.
This statement does apply to many things.Like at home with kids.Let them be on their own do not pounce on them every second.My parents follow my kid everywhere and he tends to get spoilt.I say Let him be,if he gets funny then he knows he will get a teeny punishment an all is set right.
Rewind a little - my parents never tried to push us on anything.If mum said you got to finish your homework by 7.30pm.It had to be done and actually it was.She used to walk into our room @ 8 pm and voila the work was ready.If it was not she would ask us why and decide the future course of action(which was default standing on one leg for 10 min)
I am a kind who tends to get nervous and keeps checking on given tasks or anything every second.I infact tend to suffocate people a lot. I keep doing this not only At work but follow it even in personal life....lets hope for less pressure from me in the coming days!!!!!!!!!!!
I think what you said valid for all the things. Even in research, if prof contineously asks you then you wont focus much rather get tensed thinking i need to produce things than to think how to produce and inevitable lose everything. On the other hand if you dont check at all.. then you take things for granted and do at your own liesure.. which is also not good.. a trade-off is necessary.. but the kind of percentage that need to be chosen depends on the persons in the team/students or kids..!?? isn;t so
ReplyDeleteYou know what? The more I read your blog, the more I get the idea that we're a lot alike. Again, I can't agree more, not just with the quote but also with our behavior; the same nervous feeling of checking on everything every 10 mins (or sooner). I know its a dirty habit, but if I don't, I develop a headache :-/Now that you've written about it, tell me, is there a way to overcome it as well? :D

ReplyDeleteMay be when you assign the work, put a deadline and in between drop them the mails regarding the status just like which you might have received in your days as a team member rather than a lead. Like "Are we on track?" or those funny one liners the managers are notorious to send !!! LOL....Maintain a fine balance b.w being relaxed and being suffocatin team for the work!!!
ReplyDeleteYou cannot make the train go faster by pacing up and down the compartment-These were words of wisdom from my maternal uncle.I too believe it to the core.Pressure works but only within limits.Let them act and take responsibility for their action.the work will be done in as good a manner possible.
